Wasim Akram recalls how Saleem Malik treated him like a servant and made him wash his clothes
Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has recalled how his
former team-mate Saleem Malik treated him like a servant and made him wash his
clothes.
Introduction
n an interview with Pakistan's
Express Tribune, Wasim Akram recounts being treated as a servant by former
Pakistan teammate Saleem Malik, who was widely regarded as one of the best
all-rounders in the world during the 1990s. In particular, he talks about how
Malik always had to have new shirts for games because he didn't want to wear
anything that had been washed before, so that means that Akram had to wash his
clothes every time he played or even came on as an injury replacement.
Akram also describes what it was
like bowling to him: I never enjoyed bowling to him because he would never give
you any credit when you got him out, which is understandable given how
dismissive Malik was of those below him.
What happened?
former Pakistan cricketer Wasim
Akram has recalled how Saleem Malik, captain of the 1992 World Cup-winning
team, used to treat him like a servant by making him wash his clothes.
Malik was famous for being extremely
tough on players, especially younger ones, which is what he did with Wasim who debuted
in 1989.
In an interview with The Express
Tribune, Wasim remembers having to do all sorts of chores for Malik - from
washing his clothes to getting his shoes shined - on top of playing cricket at
the highest level. He also had to put up with being told off constantly by the
then-skipper during practice sessions.
How did Wasim Akram react?
I had to do everything for him, it
was not right, he said. I thought that's not my job, I'm a cricketer.
Malik would make me do all the
household chores while he sat around watching TV, Akram said.
Akram stopped washing Malik's
clothing after one day because he was so appalled by what Malik was making him
do, saying: It's not my job to wash your clothes.
You have to serve somebody in order
for them to respect you, he said of his decision to stop doing the laundry for
the elder Pakistani player.
Conclusion
There is no doubt that Wasim Akram is one of the best
cricketers to have ever played the game, but it's disappointing to see such an
icon degrade in front of our eyes as he shares details about how he had to do
menial tasks for former Pakistan captain, Saleem Malik. It's clear now that
this was more than just a one-off incident too because Wasim mentions washing
clothes for other players too, who were not as successful as he was. This saga
is only another example of why we need to stop glorifying those who rose to
fame from humble beginnings because it can lead people down paths that they may
regret later on in life and we have seen plenty of examples in recent times.
